Description

Some experts recommend that parents wait 10 days to two weeks before starting to massage newborns with baby oil or lotion. The NHS recommends parents do not use any oils or lotions until their baby is one month old. This is because at birth, the top layer of a baby’s skin is very thin, approx a third thinner than adult skin and easily damaged. Over the first month (or longer in premature babies), a baby’s skin matures and develops its own natural protective barrier. We have made 2 oils, and recommend Newborn Bébé for 2-3 months, and Lullaby Bébé from 3 months on.

While babies thrive on loving touch and skin-to-skin contact, some babies may not be ready to enjoy massage with or without oil.

Essential oils should not be used on babies younger than 3 months old, therefore we do not recommend this oil until your baby is 3 months old!!! Aromatherapy can encourage sleep, calm anxiety, and relieve symptoms of colic.

Although we love Organic, just because a product is labelled ‘Organic’ it doesn’t mean it is the best for all skin types or ages, so we have looked at what oils are the best for babies skin. We use Certified Organic or Organic but have found Wild Harvested oils are as ‘clean’ as you can get!

We have combined the most gentle oils, to help protect, moisturise and keep babies perfect skin soft.

Apricot oil is very gentle and the oil has a high content of fatty acids and vitamins which is particularly nourishing and moisturising for skin. At the same time, the oil has a good effect against nappy rash on infants.

Grapeseed oil is high in linoleic acid which is much easier on baby’s skin than one high in oleic acid, such as olive or sunflower oils that are harsher and can cause redness – even on skin that is not sensitive. Grapeseed oil is a great oil for stopping babies skin from drying out, with the added advantage of  a bonding experience with no greasy residue. Cradle cap is a common skin condition of newborns. Using a little gentle oil on the baby’s scalp will take care of it. Products using grapeseed oil are perfect as all around skin moisturisers that do not clog tiny baby pores.

Coconut oil  helps in dermal maturity and better neurodevelopmental outcome. One medical study in 2022 found that applying virgin coconut oil on premature newborns helped improve and strengthen their skin. It can do the same for newborns and older babies as a massage oil and moisturiser. According to studies by the Natural Library of Medicine, further studies are warranted for universal recommendation.

Lavender has many calming and sedative effects to encourage sleep. A lavender oil massage can help to relax a fussy baby and encourage sleep.

Chamomile has a natural soothing effect and can traditionally has been used to treat insomnia in babies, therefore gentle that can benefit babies who have trouble sleeping. Chamomile has been shown to help anxiety and depression.

Rose quartz is known as a healing crystal and the stone of unconditional love. What more can I say!!!

Our oils are a better choice than baby oil or mineral oil, as so many oils tend to clog the pores. We also avoid using nut-based oil as it could spark an allergic reaction.

Studies have shown both Chamomile and Lavender can be effective and relieve symptoms of colic, and both can uplift a fussy baby’s spirits.

What we don’t use:

Although many recommend Olive oil for babies research by Professor Cork, a leading dermatologist from the University of Sheffield, England, published research into the effects of Olive oil on babies’ skin, the research shows that Olive oil may be contributing to a rise in cases of eczema in young babies. He demonstrated that due to the oil’s high levels of oleic acid, it can weaken the stratum corneum, the delicate top layer of skin, increasing the risk of dryness, eczema and skin irritation in babies under 3 months.

An article in the Dermatology Education Foundation found the use of olive or sunflower oil on newborn babies’ skin damages the skin barrier the researchers from the University of Manchester have reported. We have decided to lean towards caution, including oils we believe are only beneficial to babies skin.

Apricot oil is a gentle oil, recommended for use for babies, we have avoided any nut products to avoid nut allergies.

Always apply a small amount of oil to a baby’s leg or arm before massage.

Wait for 24 hours to see if there is a reaction.

If a reaction occurs, discontinue use on baby. It won’t go to waste, as this organic gentle oil can be used it on your own skin!
